Auto Insurance- Types of Auto Insurance

Liability - This is the auto insurance that will pay for the other person’s car, or other expenses, in the event of an accident, and legally it is determined your fault.

Property damage liability - This is an auto insurance requirement in all states.  With this auto insurance you are protected if a vehicle or another person’s property is damaged and you are at fault.

Bodily injury liability - If someone gets hurt in an accident, this auto insurance will cover their injuries, if the responsibility is yours.  However, this will not pay for your injuries.  In the event of an accident and it is decided it is your fault, then others involved in the accident may sue you or your auto insurance company. If your liability coverage is not enough, then they may try to sue you for your personal property.

Comprehensive - This type of auto insurance is usually optional and covers your car for non-accident damage such as: fire, hailstones, theft, something falling on the car, or vandalism etc.

Collision - Collision auto insurance will cover fixing your automobile if you are involved in an accident.

Due to the cost of collision or comprehensive auto insurance some people make the choice  not to have this type of coverage.  However, if you still owe money against the car, and are therefore making payments, the financial institution will probably require you to maintain comprehensive and collision auto insurance along with liability.
