New York Car Insurance – Basic Requirements Limits

According to law, New York car insurance must have certain dollar amounts met in some of the basic auto insurance coverage.  The following us just a brief overview of some coverage and their dollar amounts.

Bodily Injury - New York car insurance has a basic minimum requirement of $25,000 for one person or $50,000 for two or more people, if involved in an accident, for bodily insurance coverage.  This means that if others, not on your policy, are injured they will have their medical bills covered up to the limit of at least $25,000 or $50,000.

Property Damage - This will not cover your car.  However, New York car insurance will usually cover about $15,000 for property damage that you cause.  Example:  suppose you are driving down the road and a bee flies in the window landing in your lap, you swerve off the road and knock down a row of mailboxes, and hit a parked car.  New York car insurance property damage covers the cost of repairs for the mailboxes and the other car, but not the damage to your car.

Uninsured Motorist - This is similar in payout as Bodily Injury, $25,000 for one person and $50,000 for two or more people.  This type of coverage is valuable when the other person either has no insurance or very little.  According to New York car insurance this covers you and others in your vehicle, medically or if you lose time from work or other damages, in the event of an accident. If you wish to drive outside New York, you may want to add an addendum or a supplemental insurance to your New York car insurance policy to make sure you are fully covered.

Personal Insurance Protection (PIP) - Under New York car insurance this is also referred to as “no fault coverage”.  If, as the result of an accident, you, fellow passengers, pedestrians, or innocent bystanders are injured, you are protected.

Since this is just an overview, be sure to check for any exclusions for New York car insurance.
