Online Auto Insurance – Check for Legitimacy

There are many legitimate online auto insurance companies.  Unfortunately there are also scam artists and others that try to deceive people via the Internet.  These scam artists can use online auto insurance.  They are very clever and a person can be deceived without being aware of it.  For this very reason it is important to make sure that the company you may want to purchase insurance from is a legitimate online auto insurance company.

A legitimate insurance company providing a variety of coverages including online auto insurance will have several earmarks.

Go online and check their website.

Are there customer service phone numbers that you can call and talk to a real person?

If there is only an e-mail and no phone numbers this should be a warning sign.  Beware.  The company could be a phony.

Also, is there a physical address?  Not just a Post Office box, but a real place on a real street.

Does the web site have any  kind of history of the company, a link for investors, or any other information about the business.

Another place to check is with the Better Business Bureau in the state where the online auto insurance company has a physical address.  They will have information about the company you are checking into.

The Attorney General’s office, in the state of the physical address of the online auto insurance company, will also have information about any complaints filed or any suspicious activity connected with the company in question.

It pays to be cautious when choosing an online auto insurance company and make sure it is a legitimate business before giving out any information so you don’t get taken in by a scam artist.
