Has Texas Health Insurance Got You Covered?
Health insurance policies are similar from state to state, though each state will have some options particular to that state.
Texas is no different.
Texas has certain laws enacted to protect the rights of Texans when dealing with health insurance providers. There is also the Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool to assist in having affordable medical care.
If you have your medical insurance provided on the job, likely you will have your portion of the premiums taken from your check, while your employer pays the remainder.
For group Texas health insurance the standard categories are Health Maintenance Organization, Preferred Provider Organization, and Point Of Service.
The cheapest of the three is the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). However the cheaper premiums are a trade off from the standpoint that you have less of a network of physicians to choose from for your medical care. Also when you need to see a specialist, you need to work though the HMO provider for a referral.
A more attractive option is the Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), as it allows you more flexibility as to the selecting a physician of your choice. If you choose a doctor that is a part of the assigned PPO network the amount you would pay for your portion of office visits and other medical care costs would be less. Also your deductible would be reduced, which can be a considerable savings over a period of time. You are also offered greater latitude in that you do not have to select a primary care physician on your Texas health insurance plan like you would for an HMO.
The third category of Texas health insurance is Point Of Service (POS). These are basically under the umbrella of an HMO, but you are not restricted to only being able to see the doctors operating in that network. You do not need a prior authorization to make an appointment for medical treatment with any physician of your choice. However, your co-pay amount would be greater than if you saw a network physician.
Texas health insurance, like many areas of life offers many choices. You have to do your research and determine which choice is the best for you.
